In 2013, my wife, Jin Hee, and I returned to Korea and now Bangalore India after spending 13 years in San Francisco, where I contributed to the building of tradition and culture in the first all-boys high school of the International Network of the Schools of the Sacred Heart. Stuart Hall High School had been open for one year before I joined the team of teachers and administrators. As the Athletic Director, I had the pleasure of creating opportunities for students by offering 14 varsity sports, and building a reputation of respect for our programs and school not only through league championships but through a program recognized for character and integrity. It was with this experience that inspired me to accept the position of dean of boarding at Korea International School Jeju Campus in the newly established Global Education City on the beautiful island of Jeju. Here too, I had been able to share in the development of the culture and traditions while managing the growth of the residential life in a way to enhance the academic life. Great successes have been achieved in both communities. This last year. Jin and I were very happy to have joined the Stonehill International School community, back in the role of Athletic Director and Activities Coordinator for the whole school.
What I have to offer any community of which I am part is my willingness to collaborate and empower those whom I manage to achieve results to the best of their abilities. Sports have always been a major component of my life, and understanding how my role fits within the team, as well as motivating others to be the best they can be, provides the best chemistry and opportunity for success. I have been in high school education for 24 years in all facets from teaching and coaching to administrative leadership. This experience has illustrated to me a wide range of issues in operating a school, and therefore allows me to have more understanding and patience in how I personally operate. I believe in utilizing these traits to create an engaging environment for the students, and those who enthusiastically guide the students.
Creating programs, both academically and athletically, from scratch ignites my enthusiasm for the possibilities of “what can be”, and allows me to continue to look for ways I can personally grow. While already an athletic director at Stuart Hall high school in San Francisco, I went back to school to enhance my professional position by earning a Masters Degree in Sports Science. While at Korea International School Jeju, I spent the summers attending courses in London earning a principal’s certification in International School Leadership. While having worked in both Advanced Placement (AP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, I have observed and admired the the IB program as it stimulates intellectual curiosity and promotes a greater global perspective. These are academic skills that are necessary for not just surviving but thriving in today’s world.
